NJ-protest over stenging av gresk allmennkringkaster

Norwegian journalists protest over closure of Greek public broadcaster ERT

The Norwegian Union of Journalists (NJ), representing 10.000 Norwegian journalists, calls on the Greek government to revoke their shocking decision to close down its public broadcasting station ERT.

The public service broadcasting should be the most independent and must be the last media to be closed down in a democratic society. The solution for a society in crisis can never be to give the audience less information. The way to solve the problems in Greece is obviously not through limiting people’s access to information.

All journalists know that media regularly must reorganize to meet changes in technology and in society. All possibilities and models must be explored before resorting to such dramatic solutions. If the “excuse” to close down a public broadcasting is lack of transparency, then that problem should be solved and not be used as an excuse to close down the broadcaster and put 2700 of our colleagues on the streets.

This massive cut is an inadequate response to the economic and financial crisis. The decision by the Greek government to deprive the public of a service to which it has a right constitutes an attack on freedom of expression and democracy.

Og brevet fra NRKJ:

ERT MUST BE RESTORED TO AIR!

The Journalist Union in The Norwegian Broadcasting Corperation (NRK) will express our strong support to our Greek colleagues in ERT.

NRK’s Journalist Union urge the Greek Prime Minister to immediately reverse its decision to shut down the national public broadcaster, allowing ERT to go back on the air in Greece. We wholeheartedly support the open letter sent by the EBU President and Director General on 11 June 2013.

This undemocratic and unprofessional action of the Greek government undermines the existence of public service media in Greece, and its independence from the government.
